ANTS HQ / KEEPING GUIDES
Why get into ant keeping?
INTRODUCTION
Ever watched an ant discover a bit of food, disappear into the nest, then return with backup? It's one of those little moments that makes ant keeping so interesting.
With your own colony, you get to see that teamwork up close. And you don't need a huge setup or an unusual species to enjoy it.
IN THE COLONY
There's a whole world inside thenest
We usually spot ants outside, rushing across the pavement or making off with picnic crumbs. But inside their nest, they're busy caring for their young, sharing food, cleaning and looking after the queen.
The longer you watch, the more you notice. Why are they all gathering in one chamber? What's made them move their young? And how did one worker manage to tell the others where dinner was?
Some species even farm fungus, look after aphids or form living bridges. Your first colony probably won't do all that, but even the humble black garden ant has plenty of surprises.
ESSENTIAL KNOW-HOW
A different kind of pet
Ants aren't pets you cuddle or take out to play. The fun is in watching them get on with their lives. And with a small new colony, that can mean plenty of quiet days at first.
Then you notice a new worker. More ants start coming out for food. A once-empty chamber fills up. When you've watched a colony grow from the beginning, those little milestones feel pretty special.
They're fascinating for children too, with lots to discover and questions to ask. Adults should always supervise feeding, care and opening the enclosure.

What does looking afterantsinvolve?
Ants need the right food, fresh water, a secure home and suitable temperature and moisture. You'll also need to clear away leftover food and keep an eye on the nest. The details vary by species, but the day-to-day routine is usually manageable.
You don't need much room to get started. A small setup can sit on a shelf, away from direct sunlight, radiators and vibrations. Just remember that colonies grow, some need a winter rest, and keeping ants is a responsibility that can last for years.
Start with a colony that suits you
Start by choosing your ants, then find a home that suits them. Want to see a bit more activity from day one? We'd usually recommend a queen with a few workers. Starting with a queen alone can be rewarding too, but you'll need more patience.
Our starter kits make it easier to match the size of your colony to its first home. Bigger isn't always better, especially at the beginning.
