Camponotus sayi (Bicoloured Carpenter Ant)

A striking species of carpenter ant often found throughout the western United States.

Mature colonies can often be found nesting within decaying/hollow cavities in Oak trees, as their common name suggests.

They inhabit a range of habitats but are typically found in arid ecosystems where oak and hickory forests are present.

It is a medium sized species of ant which has a fast growth of development and is often referred to as a hardy/unfussy ant in the Ant-Keeping hobby. Therefore, suitable for both beginners and amateurs alike.

Colonies often reach several thousand individuals and will typically reach maturity after 3-4 years, noted by the presence of sexually reproductive alates within the nest.

Due to the natural arid environment these are found in, colonies tend to do grow exceptionally well in wooden based nests when kept at temperatures between 25-28C and a relatively low humidity of 40%. However, it is important that a water source is present within the setup.

It is illegal and strictly frowned upon to release any non-native ants into the wild.
