Aphaenogaster senilis

The nests of these ants are commonly observed throughout the west mediterranean.

Aphaenogaster senilis is a long legged, fast and aggressive species that is often found both in urban and rural areas.

Mature colonies are often found underground within meadows, forest fringes as well as urban parks and car-parks. They are considered to be an opportunistic omnivore as workers will bring back a range of items, from seeds to insects to dried animal remains.

Fun fact! As many other species of ants, they hold a pivotal role in their ecosystem(s). In this particular case, these are responsible for seed dispersal mechanisms and providing microhabitats for said seeds to actually grow and prosper into mature plants.

This medium-sized ant (queen reaching 10mm) is incredibly hardy and will form large colonies in captvity at a fast rate! Additionally, colonies will adapt well to most formicariums.

As a temperate species, these will require a mild hibernation period from November-February although workers have been seen foraging even during the winter season if temperatures are mild enough.

Ideal for beginners, amateurs and experienced keepers alike. Due to their relatively large size, they are easy to observe and as an opportunistic forager species, will accept most foods readily. For optimal growth, they should be kept between 24-28C and a relative humidity level of 50-70%.

It is illegal and strictly frowned upon to release any non-native ants into the wild.
