Iridomyrmex purpureus (Purple Meat Ant)

 

Iridomyrmex purpureus is a highly active and dominant Australian species known for its impressive foraging behaviour and bold colony presence.


Found across much of mainland Australia , this species is recognised for its strong territorial instincts and very fast-growing colonies.

 

A fantastic choice for experienced keepers seeking a dynamic and engaging species that will keep them on their toes. 

 

Care requirements

 

Difficulty: Intermediate


Colony Growth: Fast

 

Temperature:
Thrives in warm conditions between 24-28°C.

 

Humidity:
Moderate humidity within the nest is recommended (50-60%), with a drier outworld (40%).

 

Diet:
Omnivorous,  requires a mix of protein (insects) and sugars (nectar or sugar substitutes).

 

We find they love red runner roaches as well as mealworms. 

 

Behaviour:
An active daytime forager with a naturally assertive temperament and fast reproductive abilities
