Anoplolepis gracilipes (Yellow Crazy Ants)
Anoplolepis gracilipes (Yellow Crazy Ants)
The infamous Yellow Crazy Ant! These ants are known for forming colossal colonies, with thousands of diligent, long legged worker ants having the ability to thrive and invade tropical ecosystems, specifically in South East Asia.
One of the striking features of the Yellow Crazy Ant is their unique appearance. With their yellow colouration extending throughout their bodies, these ants are a sight to behold. Despite the relatively small size of the queen (10mm) and the workers (3-5mm), this species has the ability to displace an array of native wildlife of their native habitat.
Known for their opportunistic nature, this species has gained a reputation as a pest in many parts of the world. Their adaptability to various tropical environments is astounding. Coupled with the fact that this species is highly polygynous, colonies have the ability to grow at a very fast rate.
Whether you prefer plaster, Ytong, acrylic based, or naturalistic habitats, Anoplolepis gracilipes tend to do well in most setups provided that the right temperature parameters (23-27C) and humidity levels (60-70%) are accomodated for.
Be prepared for their lightning-fast agility! These ants are incredibly nimble, and observing their rapid movements, whether they are foraging or defending their nest will leave you in awe.
Colonies will readily accept a variety of freshly killed insects in the form of roaches, mealworms and crickets. To supplement a healthy diet, plenty of sugary liquids should be provided for the worker ants.
Due to their tropical nature, no hibernation is required.
It is illegal and strictly frowned upon to release any non-native ants into the wild.
